noisy 41CV/CX
Message #1 Posted by thib on 16 July 2000, 6:11 a.m.

Hello,

I already noticed many times that my old CV makes noise when it runs! It's not a big noise that anybody will hear when you use it in public but when I use it alone in my office, I can hear it. I think my CX does it sometimes also! Do you know what it means? Thanks in advance,

Thib;

Yes, I hear that some HP-41's sing to their ownsers just to tell them that they love them.

Seriously, I have heard that some 41's make a noise, and that it comes from the keypad. I don't have any that do it (or my hearing isn't good enough maybe?)

Yes, I have a few 41CVs & CXs. Two of them make noise but this noise does not come from the keypad as Steve’s. I’ve just replaced two batteries contacts I/O on them, and while paying close attention to them, I noticed an ultra-high-pitch long duration (10-sec) sound. It comes from a capacitor that mounts on the cpu board. Actually, there are three or four of them. Sounds like these caps charge and discharge constantly; this whistle does not affect operation though, timing and memory functions on the 41CX are always accurate therefore, I can’t called them faulty capacitors. The most common sound I have heard on these machines is the sound of split screw-posts debris inside the case, then the last sound after this is when it hit the trash can..POONNNHH

The last sound comes as the DEBRIS hits the bin, not the CALCULATOR, I hope :-O

It's been a long time since I have heard it, but I use sveral HP-41's ... my first HP-41CV did it frequently, seemingly when I would do a lot of Synthetic Programming. It seened harmless, and I am sur it is harmless. If I recall, the oly way I cleared it was by my version of a hard reset -- I would remove the batteries for 24-36 hours. The usually reason I even contemplated leaving them out that long was that I would sometimes get a lockup where I could not reset the HP-41CV any other way.

My 42S makes also noise. You have to hold it at your ear, but it makes sounds when a programm is running. And for the 48: that one has a heartbeat ! It's very regular, once a sec. (you must have the clock in display)

Have Fun
