Prohibited Calculators
Message #1 Posted by Bert K on 15 Jan 2000, 4:17 p.m.

Came accross a few weird calculator pages. Sheffield University has a list of approved and prohibited calculators for use in exams.

According to the lists it's not allowed to use a HP 32S, but it's OK to use a HP 42S after you "obtain an approval sticker for your calculator"...

This is a well-known subject in college (Netherlands). On my college there was also a battle going on what calculator would be allowed during examination. It is interesting to see that mostly the math-teacher is absolutely against the use of a programmeble calculator. I think because all the math-tricks they teach will not be necessary anymore (use the solver......) and they need to do more on numerical math then on analytical math. The battle was won by saying that the people who were against programmable/graphic calculators also were against the first calculators. With calculators available on the end of the 70's they preferred to use the SLIDE-RULE !!!!!
